Boring Awards Antipasto

Boring Awards Antipasto

I know!  Crazy title, right?  Well, there’s a quick story behind that.  As you may know the Emmy’s were on this past Sunday night and I have a ritual that started several years ago when my youngest child, Jr was much smaller.  My husband comes up with nicknames for the whole family so I use them here.  Jr would always come into the room and find me during awards season, watching some sort of awards show and his name for my program was “the boring awards”.   I mean he’s 13 now (and taller than I am and I’m not short) but he was probably 9 or 10.  He would always roll his eyes and say “oh no!  Not the boring awards again!”  So the name stuck.  I get so excited when award season rolls around.  By now everyone knows this is Mom’s night and to just let her be.  It’s Heaven!

The way it came about was one night when the awards (any of them) were coming on I found myself home alone (everyone had other plans and were off…silence…AHHH) so I started poking around to find something to eat for one without having to cook.  I filled my plate with cheeses and sliced meats or pepperoni and pickles and fruit.  Basically any and everything I saw that I wanted to eat and I piled myself up on my favorite spot in the couch and watched the entire (very long) program while I munched away.  It was a meal that no one in the house would deem a meal.  It was wonderful!  That first night I just used what I had.  It was so spur of the moment.  But now, I PLAN!!!  I anticipate and make a special trip to my favorite specialty grocery store and stock up and all the things I like.  I walk around like a homeless person talking out loud to myself and answering.  If you ever see me, don’t be alarmed…I am ok.  Anyway, it’s a ME night and I have so much fun!  It’s a party of one and a happy one at that.

Some of you are thinking “what is antipasto”?  I wondered as well for a long time.  It’s traditionally in Italian meals the first course “before pasta” consisting of normally cheeses, cured meats, olives, etc.  That wonderful specialty store that I was talking about…Whole Foods, is amazing.  They have an olive bar and another that I don’t know the name of but that area of the store is where I get most of my items.

My Invisible Crown Also, it’s right by the cheese section.  I could just LIVE there.  Here’s what I chose this time.

  • marinated green and calamata olives
  • spicy pickled green beans, okra and asparagus
  • marinated mushrooms
  • a hard, spicy salami made with sangeovese wine
  • horseradish white cheddar (if you’ve never had horseradish cheese you have to try it)
  • Hombolt Fog goat cheese (don’t turn your nose up, it’s really good)
  • bell pepper slices
  • cranberry walnut belle chèvre
  • spicy bread and butter pickles, sweet and dill gerkins
  • procuitto wrapped mozzerella cheese
  • assorted crackers
  • french bread with salted butter

This time I even had a dessert plate.  What?  The awards are long!

  • pink himalain sea salt caramel dark chocolate
  • carmelized pecans
  • pear slice with brie and wild lavender honey
  • sliced mango
  • salted caramel and toffee cheesecake brownie bar that I made the day before
  • small glass of red wine (for the super health benefits of course :D)

I only use a few pieces of each item.  I know it sounds like a lot but I enjoyed every bite!

Ok, let’s talk about the awards for a minute.  They were sort of boring this week.  The same people were on the stage over and over.  I really watch it for the fashion as much as anything else.  I love the red carpet.  The standouts on the screen for me were Sofia Vergara. I saw her on some of the bad lists!  Were they smoking?  She was stunning.  I mean I don’t want to jump on any bandwagons about her figure but she has slimmed down a tiny bit and is so well proportioned.  I think she was the best dressed this year.  Now, not in the category of my (pretend) friend Gwyneth when she did the white cape number.  My fav of all time.  Who saw that?  Also I thought Juliana Hough looked perfect. I’m not going to talk about worst dressed just to keep negativity away.  I’m sure they all did their best.

The standouts on my plate were probably the pear and brie, walnut cranberry belle chevre and the pickled asparagus.  Well can’t forget the salted caramel and toffee cheesecake brownie bar (wow that’s a mouthful).

What would you add to your boring awards antipasto plate?  Did you watch the awards?  Who was best dressed in your opinion?  Let’s discuss!

  1. Nice. I love that you have this special night to yourself and plan on good food.

    • It really is so nice. You know we all get so super busy and it’s wonderful to just have a moment to sit and do whatever it is you want to do. I’ve started to actually anticipate when the award shows roll around and think what I’m going to pile on my plate. It’s so much fun! And it’s really not even the awards!
